Two orbiting stars in a system called MACHO 80.7443.1718 are causing unsustainably large tides on each other.
The smaller star in the system is distorting the shape of the larger star, reaching amplitudes of 20% of its size.
Computer models show that the system will eventually be unable to sustain such giant waves. [ more ]
